You should always be careful with your braces and other orthodontic work. Unfortunately, sometimes you can take good care of your braces but still be on the receiving end of an accident or you can develop a problem. When something goes wrong with your braces, the first thing to do is contact your orthodontist and let him know what has happened. The orthodontist may want to see you right away, or he may wait to correct the problem until your next appointment. Until you are able get into the office, there are things that you can do to address the problems with your braces.
If you have a loose bracket, use dental wax to keep it from irritating your mouth. That should help until you can see the doctor. Loose bands should be saved and placed back on your teeth by the orthodontist. Save the band and bring it with you. If you have a broken wire, don’t cut it- there is a good chance that you could swallow, or even inhale the loose piece of wire. However, you can use something to push the wire into a place in your mouth where it will not irritate you, and then cover it with dental wax. If the wire has created sore spot in your mouth, you can rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash, or half a teaspoon salt in eight ounces of water. If the pain persists, try a topical oral pain reliever. A loose spacer is a good indicator that it is time to have new band placed.
